Advancing AI and Innovation in Education

Jason Dean Arnold, Ed.D., serves at the intersection of educational leadership, instructional design, and emerging technology, helping shape how institutions use innovation to improve teaching, learning, and human-centered practice. As Senior Director of E-Learning, Technology, and Communications (ETC) in the University of Florida College of Education, he leads a multidisciplinary team spanning instructional design, media production, web and software development, and strategic communications, with a growing emphasis on AI-enabled learning, immersive environments, and scalable digital experiences.

Under his leadership, the College’s work has expanded into augmented reality, virtual reality, AI-based technologies, and other emerging approaches that strengthen learner engagement and institutional capacity. His work is grounded in the belief that technology should not simply digitize instruction, but meaningfully improve outcomes through thoughtful design, personalization, and strategic implementation.

AI, XR, and Emerging Learning Technologies

A central focus of Dr. Arnold’s recent work is the design of advanced learning environments that combine conversational AI, simulation, immersive media, and experiential learning. This includes projects that explore how intelligent systems can support professional learning, communication practice, and decision-making in both education and healthcare settings. His leadership reflects a broader commitment to emerging technology not as novelty, but as a practical tool for expanding access, deepening engagement, and improving performance.

Among these efforts is SPARC, the Standard Patient Avatar for Reflective Communication Practice, a UF Health Cancer Center pilot project that uses AI-driven simulation to strengthen clinician communication and reflective practice. This work is part of a larger portfolio of cross-sector innovation that applies advanced learning technologies to real-world human challenges.

Dr. Arnold has also helped lead work in augmented and immersive learning, including the New Worlds Reading AR Expeditions initiative, which reflects a commitment to designing motivating, interactive experiences that support literacy and learning at scale. These projects demonstrate how immersive technologies can be aligned with instructional goals to create meaningful educational impact.

His broader scholarship and presentations further underscore this direction. Recent work includes presentations on artificial intelligence in medicine and micro-courses designed to improve health outcomes, highlighting his leadership in connecting AI, professional learning, and applied innovation across disciplines.

Microcredentials and Scalable Professional Learning

Another defining area of Dr. Arnold’s work is the development of scalable online learning and micro-course experiences for diverse audiences. Across his career, he has led and supported the design of professional development systems, certificate pathways, online degree experiences, and technology-enhanced training tools that help learners build practical skills in flexible, accessible formats.

This work is especially visible in projects that translate research and evidence-based practices into usable learning experiences for educators, healthcare professionals, and leadership audiences. Whether through structured online modules, AI-informed simulations, or immersive learning assets, his approach emphasizes learner-centered design, quality, and long-term scalability.

Some recent examples of this work include: Healthy Communications Practice, IIHS in the Classroom, and the Foresight Leadership Series.

Strategic Partnerships and Funded Initiatives

Dr. Arnold’s leadership is also defined by deep collaboration and a strong record of partnership-driven innovation. He works across the University of Florida ecosystem and beyond to help develop initiatives that bring together academic units, researchers, practitioners, and external partners in support of impactful, funded work. As part of his current role, he collaborates across UF to advance high-quality online and technology-enhanced learning and contributes to institutional strategy through the College’s administrative leadership team and eLearning Advisory Committee.

His collaborations with UF Health and the College of Medicine are especially notable. He has served as co-investigator on multiple grant-funded initiatives and has contributed to projects focused on clinician communication, cancer care, caregiver support, and digital learning interventions. These efforts show how thoughtful educational design and emerging technology can extend the reach of evidence-based practices into healthcare and community settings.

His funded and collaborative portfolio includes projects with the Lastinger Center for Learning, UF Health Cancer Center, Blood Cancer United, and other major initiatives tied to statewide and applied learning impact. This work reflects an ongoing commitment to building sustainable, high-value partnerships that connect innovation with measurable public benefit.

Statewide and Institutional Impact

Throughout his career, Dr. Arnold has focused on building systems and initiatives that reach beyond a single program or audience. Earlier in his career, he helped lead statewide professional learning and support systems for educators, including Early Learning Florida and STEM TIPS, as well as projects developed in partnership with Florida agencies, districts, and educational organizations. These experiences continue to inform his current leadership in designing scalable, mission-aligned digital initiatives.

At the institutional level, his leadership supports one of the nation’s highest-performing online graduate education portfolios, with UF’s online graduate programs ranked among the top nationally for more than a decade. This reflects not only operational excellence, but also a strategic commitment to quality, innovation, and sustained impact.
